DeQuervain\u2019s tenosynovitis describes the painful swelling and inflammation of the tendons of the thumb. Symptoms can be similar to those of thumb arthritis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size\" id=\"\u03b4\u03b9\u03ac\u03b3\u03bd\u03c9\u03c3\u03b7\">Diagnosis<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">History and physical exam are usually enough to confirm the diagnosis. Your doctor will typically perform the <strong>Finkelstein test<\/strong>. This involves making a fist with the thumb wrapped around the fingers. Moving the wrist up and down in that position typically reproduces the symptoms of DeQuervain\u2019s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">De Quervain's may present in a similar way to <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/drgpanagopoulos.com\/en\/arthritida-tou-anticheira\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"865\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">thumb arthritis<\/a><\/strong>. Pain can be located in the same area as in a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/drgpanagopoulos.com\/en\/katagma-skafoeidous\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"951\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">scaphoid fracture<\/a><\/strong>. This may include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Rest<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Activity modification<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Physiotherapy\/home exercise program for strengthening and stretching exercises<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>NSAIDS<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Splinting<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Steroid injection<\/strong> in the  joint<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Sometimes, De Quervain's can be related to a specific activity, ie a young parent that holds their newborn, a new mother lactating. In 70% of cases, it can lead to resolution of symptoms. Cortisone may cause a flare up for the first 24-48h, before it kicks in. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Steroid injection can also have diagnostic value, in controversial cases. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size\" id=\"\u03c7\u03b5\u03b9\u03c1\u03bf\u03c5\u03c1\u03b3\u03b9\u03ba\u03ae-\u03b8\u03b5\u03c1\u03b1\u03c0\u03b5\u03af\u03b1\">Surgical Treatment<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">If conservative treatment <strong>fails<\/strong>, the next option is surgery, which is performed in a day-case basis, under local anaesthetic. A small incision is made on top of the tendon and a small cut performed in the <strong>tendon sheath<\/strong>. This usually allows the tendon to move freely. You will have a small dressing for a few days. A hand therapy home exercise program will be given to you after the procedure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Surgical release for De Quervain's tenosynovitis is a very successful operation, with a very low
