The smooth cartilage covering these bones undergoes wear and tear, gets thin and the bone ends rub against each other. 40<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Certain jobs or recreational activities that incur significant stress on the thumb<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Inflammatory arthropathies, such as rheumatoid arthritis<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Previous fractures around the area<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Of note, there are also other forms of hand arthritis, such as osteoarthritis that typically affects the DIP joints, or rheumatoid arthritis of the fingers that primarily affects the PIP joints.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thumb arthritis is common in professional that regularly perform fine tasks with their hands, such as <strong>dentists<\/strong>, or <strong>hairdressers<\/strong>.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size\" id=\"\u03c0\u03bf\u03b9\u03b1-\u03b5\u03af\u03bd\u03b1\u03b9-\u03c4\u03b1-\u03c3\u03c5\u03bc\u03c0\u03c4\u03ce\u03bc\u03b1\u03c4\u03b1-\u03c4\u03b7\u03c2-\u03b1\u03c1\u03b8\u03c1\u03af\u03c4\u03b9\u03b4\u03b1\u03c2-\u03b1\u03bd\u03c4\u03af\u03c7\u03b5\u03b9\u03c1\u03b1\">What are the symptoms of thumb arthritis?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Symptoms of thumb CMC arthritis include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Pain at the base of the thumb, aggravated by use of the thumb<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Stiffness and restricted movements of the thumb<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Clumsiness - dropping objects<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Difficulty with tasks such as opening jars, turning keys, etc.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Deformity, such as zig zag deformity, in severe cases.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size\" id=\"\u03b4\u03b9\u03ac\u03b3\u03bd\u03c9\u03c3\u03b7\">Diagnosis<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">A thorough history and physical exam are necessary to raise suspicion of this diagnosis.  <a href=\"https:\/\/drgpanagopoulos.com\/en\/tenontitida-dequervain\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"871\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">DeQuervain\u2019s<\/a> and other hand conditions may present with similar symptoms. It may be repeated if needed. Dr Panagopoulos performs steroid injections in the office under <a href=\"https:\/\/drgpanagopoulos.com\/en\/yperichos-myoskeletikou\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"922\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ultrasound guidance<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Conservative treatment can provide relief for a long time. A cortisone injection is effective at 70% of cases, and can also have diagnostic value, if diagnosis is not completely clear.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size\" id=\"\u03c7\u03b5\u03b9\u03c1\u03bf\u03c5\u03c1\u03b3\u03b9\u03ba\u03ae-\u03b8\u03b5\u03c1\u03b1\u03c0\u03b5\u03af\u03b1\">Surgical Treatment<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If conservative measures fail to provide long-term relief, the next step in treatment is surgery. There are a few surgical options available:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><strong>Trapeziectomy &amp; ligament reconstruction<\/strong> (LRTI) \u2013 this is the most common option. It is performed under general anaesthetic +\/- regional block. The patient has a bulky dressing for a few days. This is a day case, and the patient can go home a few hours after the procedure.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><strong>Arthroscopic debridement<\/strong>, suitable for early stages of disease.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><strong>Fusion<\/strong> (arthrodesis) \u2013 this is another option. The joint is fused and can no longer move. This is typically an option reserved for the active professional that wants to go back to work as soon as possible, i.e., manual laborer, dentist, etc.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><strong>Joint replacement<\/strong> (arthroplasty) \u2013 this is also an option, with long term results pending.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/drgpanagopoulos.com\/en\/orthopaidikos-xeirourgos\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"5\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dr
